A bearing of a ship's propeller is lubricated by pressurized lubricant, sealed against ingress of water, sealed against egress of lubricant, provided with a drainage chamber between the two sealing means, and provided with water removal means which connects to said drainage chamber. In an embodiment a propeller shaft 4 is supported in bearings 8, 9, the former being lubricated by pressurized-lubricant via a pipe 10, having lower and upper parts 8a, 8b with lower and upper linings 8c, 8d respectively, and being enclosed in a housing 15. The bearing 8 is sealed by means of labyrinth seals 12, 13 which comprise a rotating member 12a or 13a fitted on the shaft 4 and a stationary member 12b or 13b fitted to the housing 15. The stationary member 12b is provided with an extension 12b<SP>1</SP> which shields the seal and shaft. The latter has a flange 5 at one end thereof which is attached by bolts 7 to a controllable-pitch propeller 3 and has a flange 6 at the other end which is connected to an intermediate shaft (not shown). An annular member 18 is secured to an annular member 17 which is attached to the housing 15, a wear-ring 22 is fitted on to the flange 5 of the shaft 4, and sealing-rings 21 to prevent ingress of water are provided between the member 18 and the flange 5. The wear-ring 22 has an extension 221 which overlaps the extension 12b<SP>1</SP> of the stationary seal member 12b. In use any water which passes through the seal 21 is collected by the extensions 22<SP>1</SP>, 12b<SP>1</SP> and conveyed to the bottom of the chamber 23, the water is then removed from the chamber 23 by means of a pipe 24. Lubricant which escapes from the bearing 8 is returned to the lubricant circulating system through a pipe 11. |
