<p>1275724 Laminating apparatus; shearing webs BRIGHTSIDE ENG (STAMCO) Ltd 9 July 1969 [13 Aug 1968] 38621/68 Headings B4B and B5N [Also in Division B8] A protective sheet of paper or other suitable material is applied to a flat surface of an article such as a steel strip 88, by feeding the strip 88 together with a web of the paper 37d over an applicator roller 16 to a driven feed roller 20, and subsequently severing the sheet from the web between the rolls 16, 20. The sheet and strip pass to a stacking device. As shown, three rubber covered rollers 12, 16, 20 are arranged in line, the rollers 12, 20 being driven at the same speed and the applicator roller 16 being an idler. Co-operating with the rollers 12... 20 are three freely rotatable pressure rollers 14, 18, 22. The web 37d supplied from a braked roll 36 passes over a tensioning roller 44 and between edge trimming discs 50, and, when the machine is not operating, its end may rest on a support 71 as shown at 37c. In operation, an end 37f passes between the rollers 16, 18 and is held against the roller 18 by an air jet 82. A steel strip 88, when fed into the apparatus by the rollers 12, 14, engages the web between the rollers 16, 18 so that the web and strip move forward together. This movement is continued by the rollers 20, 22 when the strip 88 passes between them. An air jet 86 folds the web end 37f down on to the strip, and other air jets 84 press the web against the strip. A web-shearing device 68 is situated between the pair of rollers 16, 18 and 20, 22, and when the trailing end of the strip has moved past the shear 68, the shear is operated either manually or by means sensing the trailing end to sever the web transversely. Means may be provided to fold the trailing end of the sheet cut from the web over the trailing edge of the strip 88. After the severing, a leading end 37f of the web is in position for the commencement of the next applying operation. The web material may be of paper, corrugated paper, card, cloth, metal or plastic foil, perforate or imperforate, or woven material. Sheets may be applied in the manner described to flat surfaces of articles which do not have a pair of parallel flat surfaces. The shearing device 68, Fig. 5, may comprise a wire 70 stretched between two pivoted arms 72 actuated by a pneumatic piston-and-cylinder assembly 80, Fig. 1, and may sever a sheet from the web in both directions of its movement.</p> |
