<p>Reaction vessel, mixer or crystalliser is for handling liquids even of high viscosity which have the tendency to stick to the walls and block the vessel. The unit is a ball mill consisting of cylindrical jacketted vessel divided into three or four sections by perforated plates. The vessel is supported on two end bearings over a trough. Liquid enters the hollow shaft at one end and leaves through a similar shaft at the other end. Heating or cooling media is introduced through jacket surrounding the shaft. Each compartment has a branch for introduction and discharge of the balls. Separation plates are recommended to have radial slits between first and second compartment and circular perforations between second and third. The balls must be inert, nonshatter material, heavier than the liquid, such as steel, ceramic and be coated with e.g., rubber. Diameter of the balls should be 5 to 10% of the vessel which should contain 30 to 80% of the balls and 40 to 60% of reacting liquids. The vessel should operate at 0.2 to 0.5 the speed of the corresponding ball mill used for partial reductions.</p> |
