PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recording apparatus which adaptively determines whether image formation with respect to paper can be carried out or not. SOLUTION: According to an embodiment, the inkjet recording apparatus has a sensor and a controller. The sensor is provided on the upstream side of an inkjet head in the conveyance direction of the paper and detects the state of an image formation surface of the paper. The controller determines whether the image formation surface has already undergone printing in a coloring agent other than the ink for inkjet or not (Act 102). If the image formation surface has already undergone printing in the coloring agent other than the ink for inkjet (Yes of Act 102), the controller carries out control so as to discharge paper without forming an image on the image formation surface by the inkjet head (Act 106).
