A method for producing a polyarylene sulfide by reacting, in an organic polar solvent, a sulfidizing agent with a dihalogenated aromatic compound in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, which comprises: for conducting the reaction in such a manner that the polymerization time (T1a) within a temperature range of 230°C inclusive to 245°C exclusive is 30 minutes inclusive to 3.5 hours exclusive and, at the end point of the step, the conversion ratio of the dihalogenated aromatic compound is 70-98 mol%; and for conducting the reaction in such a manner that the polymerization time (T2) within a temperature range of 245°C inclusive to 280°C exclusive is 5 minutes inclusive to 1 hour exclusive.
