PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus adjustment device and a focus adjustment method capable of improving the degradation of a main subject detecting performance in an electronic zoom state or the like. SOLUTION: The focus adjustment device has a means for extracting an output signal of a subject image projected to an effective imaging area of a photoelectric conversion means, and an extraction means for extracting a luminance signal in a specified frequency band of a subject according to an output signal from the means. Before preparation for photography, a focus lens is moved and also the first operation to specify a main subject area by performing AF scan operation to acquire an output signal from the extraction means in a focus detection area to be related to the position of the focus lens is carried out. During preparation for photography, the second operation to perform focusing operation by performing the AF scan operation is carried out. Before preparation for photography, if the extracted output signal corresponds to a part of the subject image projected to the effective imaging area, the third operation different from the first operation is carried out to specify the main subject area.
