Disclosed is an organic compound that, as a material for a highly efficient and highly durable organic electroluminescent element, has the excellent characteristics of having electron stopping power, excellent electron-hole injection and electron-hole transport performance, high stability as a thin film, and high light-emitting efficiency. Further disclosed is a highly efficient and highly durable organic electroluminescent element utilizing same. The organic electroluminescent element is a compound having a carbazole ring structure represented by the belowmentioned general formula, has a pair of electrodes and at least one organic layer sandwiched therebetween, and is characterized by said compound being used as a constituent material of least one of the organic layers.
