A planer tool having a housing, cutter 46 and base plate 30 has a portion 48 of the base plate moveable relative to the remainder of the base plate between a first position in which it is retracted or substantially disposed within a recess in the base plate and a second position in which it extends beyond the base plate, or beyond the edge of the base plate. The portion may be a U-shaped slide received within slots 52 of a front shoe and held flush with the base plate such that during use of the tool it extends in front of the tool to provide an additional guide before cutting. Indicators may be provided on the movable portion, or on a formation on the portion, indicating depth of cut or alignment. The movable portion may also be in the form of a hinged plate (figure 2b) providing a chamfer support or a removable hatch covering a debris channel (figure 4). |
