<p>An apparatus for inserting a document (1,100) into an envelope (3), the apparatus comprising: means for holding an envelope (3) at an insert station; pivotally mounted fingers (12) for opening the envelope (3); and means for moving the document (1,100) to be inserted along a platform (4) over the fingers (12) and into the envelope (3); wherein the platform (4) is pivoted at an upstream end and upwardly spring biased so that the platform (4) is depressed against the spring bias, by an amount dependent on the weight of the insert document (1,100) moving over, so that a light insert document (1) follows a path which subtends a steeper angle to the horizontal compared to a heavy insert document (100).
