1337556 Manufacturing containers of rigid foam plastics S E M SOLLERUD 10 July 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 32237/72 Addition to 1315472 Headings B5D and B5K [Also in Division B8] In a process of manufacturing containers of rigid foam plastics, preferably foam polystyrene, a sheet 11 of the rigid foam plastics is wrapped around a mould core 10 so that its adjacent edges overlap above a recess 12 in the core 10, a heating jaw 13 is introduced between the said edges with its end projecting into the recess 12 and so that the outer corner of the lower edge, and the inner corner of the upper edge of the sheet are made molten, the jaw 13 then being rapidly withdrawn and a moulding plate 14 subsequently lowered to press the edges together and form a sealed joint inwardly of a corner of the container shell. The latter can be closed at one, or both, ends by means of end members welded thereto. As shown in Figs. 4-6 such an end member 20 is placed on the open end of a filled container 11 with a part 22 thereof projecting into the container and a shaped welding jaw 23 is pushed into the joint between the lid 20 and the container 11 along each side of the latter to melt the plastics at the joint and form a U-shaped recess, Fig. 5. The jaws 23 are rapidly retracted and a shaping tool 24 is lowered to form a welded joint, Fig. 6. The cover (20) can be produced by further expanding a rigid, foamed plastics, cover sheet (20) by heat from an infra-red heater (311) in a water cooled fixture (30) to raise the part (22) of the cover (20), Fig. 7, not shown. A delivery opening (40) in the cover (20), Fig. 9, not shown, can be closed by a detachable strip (41).
|
