Disclosed is a vehicle control device that improves drivability by producing handling characteristics that more accurately reflect the driving environment and driving style. The disclosed vehicle control device changes an index, which sets the handling characteristics for the vehicle, on the basis of the acceleration of the vehicle. When a sportiness index is changed due to changes in acceleration (Gx, Gy), the manner in which the sportiness index is changed differs depending on what operations the driver performed to cause the aforementioned changes in acceleration (Gx, Gy). Thus, the sportiness of the vehicle, a handling characteristic, can be made to reflect the driving style as manifested in the form of the operations performed by the driver.
