PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that color shift and image irregularities are caused when traveling of an intermediate transfer belt becomes unstable due to occurrence of sagging of the belt, because a toner image formed on a photoreceptor drum is transferred to a recording medium through the intermediate transfer belt in an image forming apparatus adopting an intermediate transfer system. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: the intermediate transfer belt 21 which is arranged to be opposed to the photoreceptor drums 11a to 14a and to which the toner images on the photoreceptor drums are transferred; a driving roller 23 which drives and conveys the intermediate transfer belt 21; an idle roller 24 which applies prescribed tension to the intermediate transfer belt 21; a backup roller 30 which is disposed on a downstream side of the driving roller 23 and an upstream side of the idle roller 24; and a secondary transfer roller 25 which is disposed to be opposed to the backup roller 30 through the intermediate transfer belt 21 and transfers the toner image on the intermediate transfer belt 21 to recording paper 1.
