PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a thermoplastic composite material by which an inorganic material can be uniformly dispersed in a thermoplastic resin even after melting molding, and by which gelling, foaming or the like is suppressed to such a degree that a practical problem is not caused. SOLUTION: The method for producing a thermoplastic composite material includes forming a thermoplastic resin by living radical polymerization of a radical polymerizable monomer with a free initiator in the presence of inorganic nanoparticles surface-modified with a coupling agent, wherein among functional groups of the coupling agent and inorganic nanoparticles causing a reaction of the surface modification, remaining functional groups not causing the reaction are reacted with functional groups of a quenching agent before or after the living radical polymerization.
