PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system, in which each communication apparatus, sensor or actuator can be individually shifted to a dormant state or an active state without remarkably changing a communication protocol in particular, the communication system including communication apparatuses of master/slave configuration, and to provide the communication apparatus and a communication method. SOLUTION: A master communication apparatus transmits corresponding tokens (Token 0, Token 1, ...) to respective slave communication apparatuses cyclically in order and if a token corresponding to each slave apparatus itself is transmitted to a communication line, the slave apparatus transmits data (Data 1, Data 2, ...) subsequently to the token. The master communication apparatus transmits a corresponding dormant shift instruction token (Token 128) in place of a token (e.g., Token 2) to a slave communication apparatus to be shifted to a dormant state and if the dormant shift instruction token is transmitted to the slave communication apparatus itself, the slave communication apparatus is shifted into the dormant state.
