PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent noise from occurring and parts from being deteriorated due to the repeated collision of a lock pin on a lock hole side wall surface while a foreign matter inclusion eliminating control is performed to eliminate the inclusion of foreign matter in a hydraulic control valve in a variable valve timing control device with an intermediate lock mechanism. SOLUTION: This variable valve timing control device changes the variation pattern (variation range) of the control duty of the hydraulic control valve 25 according to the content of abnormality (abnormal mode) when an abnormality is detected and the foreign matter inclusion eliminating control is performed. Therefore, when an abnormality occurs in a period in which the device controls so that the lock pin 58 does not project and the device performs the foreign matter inclusion eliminating control, the device can limit the variation range of the control duty of the hydraulic control valve 25 within a control area other than the control area of a lock mode. Consequently, noise is prevented from occurring and parts are prevented from being deteriorated due to the repeated collision of the lock pin 58 on the lock hole side wall surface while the foreign matter inclusion eliminating control is performed.
