PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission, capable of improving transmission efficiency of drive energy while minimizing friction loss. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission includes first to third single-pinion planetary gearsets PG1, PG2 and PG3. An input shaft IN is regularly coupled to a sun gear S2, and an output shaft OUT is regularly coupled to a ring gear R3. At least eight forward speeds and one reverse speed are obtained by a combination of simultaneous engagements of three of six friction elements composed of a first clutch C1 selectively coupling a sun gear S1 to a carrier PC1; a second clutch C2 selectively coupling the sun gear S2 to a carrier PC3; a third clutch C3 selectively coupling a carrier PC2 to a rotary member M2; a fourth clutch C4 selectively coupling the carrier PC2 to the carrier PC3; a first brake B1 capable of locking the rotation of the sun gear S1; and a second brake B2 capable of locking the rotation of the carrier PC3.
