The projection display device (2) has a flat combiner element (3), where the combiner element is arranged between a vehicle occupant and a disk of the vehicle, such that an image is superimposed at the combiner element in the visual range of a viewing direction of the vehicle occupant. An area of the combiner element is formed partly with a reduced transparency in a manner that it covers a part of the vehicle, which locks the free view through the combiner element from the view of a vehicle occupant behind the combiner element. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a projection display device.
