Disclosed is an apparatus for augmenting an electronic image of a real scene with augmentation data, comprising a perspective electronic camera, a display for displaying the image of the real scene, a device for determining the position of the perspective camera in a global coordinate system, a device for continuously determining the angle of twist of the perspective camera relative to the global coordinate system, a data storage unit containing the augmentation data relating to the global coordinate system, and an arithmetic unit designed to communicate with the data storage unit, the devices for determining the position and the angle of twist, the perspective camera, and the display. The arithmetic unit gives instructions to the display on how to represent the augmentation data such that said data is associated with visible objects in the image of the real scene. The disclosed apparatus is characterized in that the device for determining the angle of twist of the perspective camera comprises the following components: a. a sensor that is used for measuring the direction of gravity and is rigidly connected to the perspective camera; b. a spherical camera rigidly connected to the perspective camera, the image planes of the cameras being perpendicular to one another; c. a marker arrangement encompassing at least two markers which are arranged on a marker plane that can be twisted relative to the global coordinate system in such a way that all markers lie within the lens coverage of the spherical camera, the arrangement of the markers indicating a set direction on the marker plane; d. a device for continuously measuring the angle of twist of the direction indicated on the marker plane relative to a direction of an axis of the global coordinate system, said direction running perpendicular to the direction of gravity. |
