The method involves upstreaming the swirl valve (24) in the combustion air flow direction of a throttle valve (14). The positions and position sequences of the throttle valve are compared for two different positions of the swirl valve and for a nominal combustion air mass. The positions and position sequences of the throttle valve are pre-determined by a combustion air mass regulating device. A defect or a function of the swirl valve is determined as a function of the comparison. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for the execution of the method; and (2) a control device for an internal combustion engine.
