A partially transparent solar cell 11 comprising a plurality of layers, one or more of which are semi-transparent or opaque, whereby an array of unconnected holes 10 are formed in one or more of said semi-transparent or opaque layers, allowing the transmission of light through said holes 10; the holes 10 are formed using wet-etching, where at least a first liquid etchant is provided to the surface of the first layer via ink-jet printing which allows the size and density of the holes 10 to be controlled in one or two dimensions. If more than one layer of the cell is opaque a second etchant can be used after the first to remove the second opaque material, this second etchant can be administered via the same ink-jet method or by washing across the surface of the layer. An ink-jet device for 12 producing solar cells of this kind is also disclosed. |
