PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side-knock type writing utensil which is rich in unexpectedness or interest by deforming a character or changing a posture interlockingly with a knocking movement. SOLUTION: The writing utensil includes: an elastically deformable character 13 attached to the base end of a body 10; a pressing member 14 having, in its upper end, a pressing part 14a penetrating the character 13 in an axil center direction and protruding above the character 13, and having its lower end inserted into the body 10; and an interlocking mechanism disposed between a knock 11 and the pressing member 14 and configured to depress the pressing member 14 by the depressing operation of the knock 11, thereby crushing the character 13 by the pressing part 14a, and return the pressing member by the returning operation of the knock 11.
