<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically identify whether a read/write error is due to an IC card reader/writer or due to damage to or degradation of a card. <P>SOLUTION: If a read failure is detected with a first electrical contact T1 connected to an IC chip 13 of a card 5 but a read failure is not detected with a second electrical contact T2 connected to the IC chip 13 of the card 5, an alarm indicative of an anomaly in the first electrical contact T1 is output.
