The method involves operating an electric machine (6) operated as a generator and/or as an electric motor, and mechanically connecting the electric machine with an internal combustion engine (2) by a crank shaft (3). A lubricant pump (4) is connected with the crank shaft in a torque-proof manner. The crank shaft and the lubricant pump are controlled by a control device (15) in a predetermined time period during normal driving of a motor vehicle. The crank shaft and the lubricant pump are driven by the electric machine.
