PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix substrate which constitutes an electro-optical device with high display quality, by including a protection circuit with an excellent light shield characteristic. SOLUTION: The active matrix substrate includes a display section in which pixel circuits are formed and arranged on the substrate; and the protection circuit which is connected to the wiring lines of the display section. The protection circuit includes transistors which are diode connected; an insulating layer formed covering the transistors; and a light-shielding layer which is formed in an area facing at least a channel region of the transistor on the insulating layer and which is connected to at least either the gate or the source of the transistor.
