The plug (1) has a center electrode (2), and mass electrodes (3a-3d) comprise a capacity with finite conductivity so that two successive ignition sparks lies at different mass electrodes. The mass electrodes are held at a predefined high electrical potential after the ignition spark. The mass electrodes are individually controlled after the ignition spark for discharge of the electrodes. A control device controls an ignition coil. A capacitor is switched against a mass between the mass electrodes and the plug. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling ignition of a multi-spark plug.
