PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the followability of detection to the change of a surface to be cleaned, in a vacuum cleaner for indexing the easiness of removing dust on the surface to be cleaned by using a dust sensor and changing an energization amount to an electric blower. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner is provided with the dust sensor 8 for detecting dust passing through an intake path, sums up the output values of the dust sensor 8 per unit time at each prescribed cycle, indexes the easiness of removing the dust on the surface to be cleaned from the summed-up result, and changes the energization amount to the electric blower 2 corresponding to the index. In the vacuum cleaner, a floor separation detection means 11 for detecting that a suction tool is separated from the surface to be cleaned is provided; the output data of the dust sensor 8 stored until then are reset once when the suction tool is tentatively separated from the surface to be cleaned and is grounded again or when an operation is started; the index is calculated in a cycle shorter than usual for the prescribed period of time thereafter, and the followability of the detection to the change of the surface to be cleaned is improved.
