PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a composite material by which a cost-reduced composite material is produced, and to provide the composite material. SOLUTION: The method for producing a composite material 10 comprises: a step in which a phase including thermally conductive particles is fed to the opening part of the surface 11a of a metal base material 11; and a step in which the metal base material 11 contacted with the phase and the phase are subjected to friction stirring. The composite material 10 is provided with the metal base material 11 having the surface 11a, and a metal matrix composite material 12 arranged at the surface 11a of the metal base material 11. The metal matrix composite material 12 includes a metallic material composing the metal base material 11, and thermally conductive particles having a volume content of 50 to 70 vol%.
