Membrane electrode unit comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane (16) made of at least a polymer, two electrodes (18, 20) sandwiching the polymer electrolyte membrane, at least one electrolyte, which wets the polymer electrolyte membrane, and at least a silicate derivative that wets and incorporated into the polymer electrolyte membrane and/or the two electrodes, where silicate derivative comprises at least a hydrophobically substituted silicate group or at least a hydrophobically substituted silicate oligomer, and at least a polar acid group. An independent claim is included for a fuel cells comprising a single cell (12) containing the membrane electrode unit.
