ALUMINUM NITRIDE-BASED POWDER AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

PURPOSE:To improve sinterability by dispersing AlN powder in a soln. of an alkoxide of a group IIa or IIIa metal in alcohol, hydrolyzing the alkoxide and carrying out heating in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:An alkoxide of a group IIa or IIIa metal such as yttrium isopropoxide is dissolved in alcohol by 0.1-3wt.% (expressed in terms of the oxide) and AlN powder having <=3mum average particle size and <=1.5wt.% oxygen content is dispersed in the resulting soln. Water is then added to hydrolyze the alkoxide and the surface of the AlN powder is coated with at least one or more oxide of the group IIa or IIIa metal by heating to <=1,000 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
