A hydrocarbon fuel composition suitable for an internal combustion engine comprises a hydrocarbon fuel and as a cleaning agent for carbonaceous deposits a compound selected from 1-(3-aminopropyl)-2-pyrrolidinone, 1-(3 aminopropyl) imidazole, N-hydroxyethyl imidazolidinone, N-aminoethyl-imidazolidinone and 2-(2-aminoethylamino) ethanol. The fuel can be a gasoline and include a carrier in which the cleaning agent is first dispersed before blending with the fuel. The carrier can be a lubricating oil, a polyether or a polymer of a C2 to C6 monoolefin.
