The method involves introducing a reactant into a flue gas stream (13) as an aqueous solution at a flue gas temperature of 250 to 800 degrees Celsius, where the reactant reacts with a toxic substance to be removed, where flue gas stream circulates around a pre-heater (19). The reactant is an alkaline compound e.g. alkali oxide, alkali hydroxide, alkali carbonate and alkali hydrogen carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate. The reactant is dry or wet by air injection. An independent claim is also included for a combustor comprising a waste heat boiler.
