A clamping device for coupling base holders or machine spindles to cutting tools or tool holders has two expanding spanners (22, 24) which grip from behind with radially outwards projecting clamping claws (32, 40) clamping shoulders (20, 22) arranged inside the machine spindle and tool holder (12). Two spanners (22, 24) are mutually linked in their central area by means of an expanding member (26), forming a clamping block. In the contracted state, the clamping block has an outer diameter which is smaller than the smallest inner diameter both of the machine spindle and of the tool holder.
