PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating type steam engine which is simple in construction and easy in manufacture and maintenance. SOLUTION: A reciprocating type steam engine includes a cylinder 1, a piston 2, a crankcase 3 connected with the cylinder, a crankshaft 4, a piston rod 5 for connecting the piston and the crankshaft, a high-pressure steam supply port 6 provided to a cylinder head, and a high-pressure steam supply solenoid vale 7 for controlling the supply of high-pressure steam from a high-pressure steam source to a high-pressure steam supply port. A steam outlet 8 which communicates a cylinder cavity C with an inside of the crankcase 3 is formed in the cylinder 1, when the piston 2 is located at the bottom dead center and its proximity. A steam discharge port 9 for discharging a low-pressure steam entering from the steam outlet 8 is formed in the crankcase 3. The open/close of the high-pressure steam supply solenoid valve 7 is controlled in response to the rotational phase of the crankshaft 4 using a phase indication member 10 attached to the crankshaft 4, and a switch 11 for detecting the phase indication member.
