The method involves obtaining a preset number of parameters representative of similarity values calculated between neighbor blocks and a set of reference blocks of a reference zone of a reference image, for each neighbor block. Nature of the neighbor blocks is characterized from analysis of values of the parameters. A movement vector associated to a current block is determined based on a function applied to movement vectors respectively associated to the neighbor blocks, where the function depends on nature of the neighbor blocks. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for estimation of a movement vector associated to a current block of a current image in a sequence of images, comprising an obtaining unit (2) an information storage medium readable by a computer or microprocessor for storing computer program instructions to implement a method for estimating a movement vector associated to a current block of a current image in a sequence of images (3) a computer program product loaded in a programmable apparatus, comprising a sequence of instructions for implementing a method for estimating a movement vector associated to a current block of a current image in a sequence of images.
