The method involves actuating a valve e.g. tank ventilation valve (28), with a control signal at a preset test frequency, and detecting an output signal of sensors e.g. air flow sensors (17), of an internal combustion engine (1). The output signal of the sensors is subjected to frequency analysis. The valve is detected as functional if the test frequency in the output signal of the sensors is detected based on results of the frequency analysis. The valve is switched off after controlling the valve with the control signal at the test frequency. The sensors are designed as pressure sensor, seismic sensor, and air flow sensor. An independent claim is also included for a control device for a motor vehicle, for executing a method for checking operation of a valve.
