Provided is a catalyst precursor, which has excellent safety and stability, has a high stable activity retention rate, is capable of repeated use, has a high reaction recovery rate, and is easily worked into various shapes. The catalyst precursor comprises a catalytic metal compound supported on a structure wherein the entire structure is formed from gold or a gold alloy whereof the primary component is gold and wherein the surface has been modified with elemental sulfur, or a structure wherein at least the surface is formed from gold or a gold alloy whereof the primary component is gold and wherein the surface has been modified with elemental sulfur. Photoelectron spectroscopy of the catalyst precursor reveals a peak derived from the catalytic metal compound, as well as a peak derived from sulfur wherein the peak of the sulfur 1s orbital is within a range of 2470 eV ± 2 eV in terms of the peak top position. |
