PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition satisfying at least one characteristic or at least having a suitable balance related to at least two characteristics in the characteristics such as a high maximum temperature of the nematic phase, a low minimum temperature of the nematic phase, a small viscosity, a large optical anisotropy, a large dielectric anisotropy, a large specific resistance, a high stability to ultraviolet light, a high stability to heat, a short helical pitch, etc., and also provide an AM (active matrix) element having a short response time, a large voltage-holding rate, a large contrast ratio, a long service life, a little light leak, etc.SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition having the nematic phase is provided with that it contains a specific optically active compound as a first component and a specific four ring compound having a high maximum temperature of the nematic phase as a second component, and may contain a specific compound having a high maximum temperature or a small viscosity as a third component and as a fourth component, a specific compound having a positively large dielectric anisotropy, respectively, and a liquid crystal-displaying element containing the composition is also provided. |
