FIELD: medicine. ^ SUBSTANCE: ophthalmic composition contains a water carrier ingredient and an effective amount of at least one compatible soluble substance for eye surface protection against hyperosmotic stress where the compatible soluble substance is chosen from a group consisting of carnitine and erythrite. The ophthalmic composition has osmolarity in the range 200 to 1000 mOsmol/kg. Also, the ophthalmic composition can contains glycerine and carboxymethyl cellulose, a preserving agent. The ophthalmic composition delivers compatible soluble substances to eye surface cells to counterbalance an osmotic stress thereon. The composition is applied for manufacturing a drug for eye surface protection against hyperosmotic stress.
