PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cosmetic or detergent composition comprised of a polyglycerol alkyl ether which is suitable for cosmetics or detergents, very stable and inexpensive.SOLUTION: The cosmetic or detergent composition includes polyglycerol 2-ethylhexyl ether, and the average of the addition number of a 2-ethylhexyl group to the polyglycerol of the polyglycerol 2-ethylhexyl ether is 1.5 or more. The polyglycerol 2-ethylhexyl ether is obtained by reacting the polyglycerol and 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether in the presence of a catalyst comprised of an alkaline compound.
