A method and associated apparatus for registering two medical images of a subject. A first image is compared with a first anatomical atlas or reference image and a second image with a second anatomical atlas, to generate labels or landmarks for anatomical features 104, 106, 108, 110, 112, 114 in each image. The first anatomical atlas has at least two features in common with the second, and each label comprises a suggested location of the anatomical feature to which it relates. A plurality of labels are identified for each image, and a value of a similarity function between labels of the respective images is calculated. The two images are registered based on the value of the similarity function. The method may further involve identifying a best pair of labels which have the best or lowest value of associated similarity function. A geometric transform may be calculated to align the labels of one image with the labels of the other image. |
