PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology which can detect the failure of a driving source before a driver operates it.SOLUTION: A motor 13 serves as a power source for driving a shift switching mechanism 12 to switch a shift range of the automatic transmission 3. A shift-by-wire ECU15 controls the motor 13 so that the shift range of the automatic transmission 3 becomes the shift range which corresponds to a selection-operation using a shift lever 2. Furthermore, the motor 13 is rotated to an extent such that the shift range does not switch when the running speed of vehicle is more than or equal to the determining speed of failure in case the shift range is D range and when the parking brake works and the ignition switch 7 is OFF in case the shift range is P range. That is, an operation for detecting whether the motor 13 is abnormal or not can be performed if the possibility that the vehicle driver operates the shift lever 2 becomes low.
