PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a psychotropic agent which is available from natural products and can safely take over a long period of time, in particular the psychotropic agent having an action of preventing and/or alleviating the symptom of depression.SOLUTION: There is provided a psychotropic agent which contains, as an effective ingredient, at least one compound selected from the group consisting of armepavine, O-methylarmepavine and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof being specific benzylisoquinoline derivatives, and which prevents and/or alleviates the symptom of depression.
