The stanchion (1) has posts defined by pivoting bars (4) and homologous vertical bars (3). The pivoting bars are carried by a fixed common frame (6), and the vertical bars are carried by a movable rigid assembly (5). The assembly is arranged against the frame. The assembly is translationally moved along its vertical plane with respect to the frame to vary the width of a neck base reserved for an animal. A jack i.e. electric linear jack (7), is assembled on the frame and the assembly through its respective ends so as to control translatory movement of the assembly with respect to the frame.
