PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for airway positive pressure treatment for a patient with cardiac failure for improving the cardiac failure symptom or sign as well as by CPAP by modulating the mask pressure in such a way as to improve comfort without causing hyperventilation, carbon shortage, alkalosis or closing of the upper respiratory tract; and to stabilize or prevent Cheyne-Stokes breathing or central sleep apnea caused by many factors.SOLUTION: The apparatus for the treatment of Cheyne-Stokes breathing or central sleep apnea includes: a blower 10 for applying ventilatory assistance to the patient; and a micro-controller 16 and a servo 19 for deriving a measure of long-term average ventilation from a measure of instantaneous ventilation and controlling the blower 10 with 95% of the measure of average ventilation as a target ventilation. The apparatus modulates the positive pressure synchronously with the respiratory airflow if the instantaneous ventilation is at least the target ventilation, and modulates the positive pressure so that the instantaneous ventilation is the target ventilation if the instantaneous ventilation is less than the target ventilation. |
