PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material not containing an expensive noble metal or its alloy, such as platinum or platinum alloy and suitable for an electrode catalyst for a fuel cell and the like.SOLUTION: The carbon material is obtained by firing a wholly aromatic polybenzimidazopyrrolone composition comprising 100 pts.mass of a wholly aromatic polybenzimidazopyrrolone and 1-150 pts.mass of a metallophthalocyanine at 500-1,500°C in an inert gas atmosphere. Since the carbon material is high in its oxygen reduction initial potential, it can be suitably used as the electrode catalyst for the fuel cell, catalysts for various chemical reactions and the like.
