1. A method of treating a saccharide-containing composition comprising contacting a composition containing a saccharide with a compound of formula (I) or a salt thereof wherein
(1) R1-R4 are the same or different and each is independently: —H, -M, C1-C8 alkyl, alkylene oxide, oligoalkylene oxide, or polyalkylene oxide, orany two of R1-R4 taken together is a divalent counterion, and the other two of R1-R4 is defined as in (1); orany three of R1-R4 taken together is a trivalent counterion, and the other one of R1-R4 is defined as in (1); orany two of R1-R4 taken together is a divalent counterion, and the other two of R1-R4 is the same or a different divalent counterion; orall of R1-R4 taken together is a tetravalent counterion;(2) each X is the same or different and each is independently: —H, —OH, C1-C8 alkyl, C2-C8 alkenyl, alkylene oxide, oligoalkylene oxide, polyalkylene oxide, halo, —NO2, —R7NO2, —OR8, —R7OR8, —OR7OR8, —OM, —R7OM, —CONH2, —R7CONH2, —C(O)OR8, —R7C(O)OR8, —C(O)OM, —R7C(O)OM, —C(O)R8, —R7C(O)R8, —PO4, —R7PO4, —SO3H, —SO3M, —R7SO3H, —R7SO3M, —NR8R9, —R7NR8R9;(3) R7 is a divalent C1-C8 alkylene, alkylene oxide, oligoalkylene oxide, or polyalkylene oxide group, and R8 and R9 are the same or different and each is independently: —H, C1-C8 alkyl, alkylene oxide, oligoalkylene oxide, or polyalkylene oxide;(4) M is a monovalent counterion;(5) n is 0 or an integer of 1 to 4;(6) the saccharide-containing composition comprises a hydrolysis product of a lignocellulosic feedstock; and(7) the saccharide in the saccharide-containing composition comprises an oligosaccharide derived from a cellulose portion of the lignocellulosic feedstock. |
