A method and an apparatus for remotely controlling and upgrading firmware in an IP network environment are provided. The method for upgrading firmware of an IPTV receiver according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: connecting to an IP network to perform a provisioning operation; receiving firmware update announcement information; acquiring P2P tracker address information of a P2P network from the firmware update announcement information; and downloading the firmware to the P2P network by using the P2P tracker address information. Further, the IPTV receiver according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a service access unit for connecting to an IP network to perform a provisioning operation; a network interface unit for receiving firmware update announcement information; and a firmware upgrade unit for acquiring P2P tracker address information of a P2P network from the firmware update announcement information, wherein the firmware upgrade unit downloads the firmware to the P2P network by using the P2P tracker address information.
