Reflectors; mounting reflectors on lamp casings.-In a vehicle lamp in which the reflector comprises a lower parabolic portion combined with an upper curved portion adapted to diffuse laterally a short range beam of light over a wide angle immediately in front of the vehicle, as described in the parent Specification, the curved surface is formed as a separate sheet metal pressing, stamping, or spinning adapted to be detachably secured in position in front of the upper part of a standard parabolic reflector. The curved surface b is preferably in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone divided in the plane of its axis and with its rear edge meeting the main reflector in a vertical plane containing, or just behind, the focus and at right-angles to the axis of the parabola. The surface b is of such length and inclination that all rays of light reflected therefrom are directed clear of the front edge of the parabolic reflector. The surface b may merge into a half ring a soldered or otherwise secured to a flanged circular rim f adapted to be clamped between the front glass and the front edge of the parabolic reflector. The half ring a may be flat or convex, and it may be formed with concentric ribs, steps, or corrugations. The surface b mav be continued in a vertical or rearwardly inclined step c leading to a concave curved part d of approximately quarter spherical shape and cut away at e to accommodate an electric lamp holder. The part d extends downwardly and rearwardly to the horizontal plane containing the axis of the parabola and is adapted to project a beam of light downwardly on to the road immediately in front of the vehicle.</p> |
