The apparatus has an air separation double column provided with an average pressure column (9) and a low pressure column (11). A heat exchanger (7) is provided in an enclosure. Pipes (15A, 17A) are connected to pipes (15, 17), respectively. The former pipes are connected to the average pressure column and the low pressure column, respectively. Each of the former pipes emerges at the interior of the double column, and is adapted to be connected to other column. An independent claim is also included for a method for modifying an existing air separation apparatus.
