Baths.-In a sheet-metal oil-retaining casing for chain gearing comprising two parts 10, 12 fitting together on opposite sides of the geared shafts, external gutters 26, 32, 40 for catching leaking oil project from the lower part 12 and together extend completely around the casing. The edges of the upper part 10 fit within the edges of the lower part 12 and are gripped by steel strips 24 secured to the part 12. The gutters 26 are disposed adjacent the upper side edges 18 so a to serve as stiffening flanges therefor, and are covered by stiffening flanges 30 projecting from the part 10. The gutter 32 is in the form of an open trough extending around the lower end and along the sides of the part 12 to beyond the lower open ends of the gutters 26 which drain into the trough. The end part of the trough is closed by a hinged cover 34 and serves as a filling opening, holes 36 being provided for the passage of oil from the trough into the casing. The trough has an overflow opening 38, and a length of wire 37 is soldered to the inside to indicate the correct oil level. The gutter 40 extends around the upper end of the part 12 from points beneath the upper ends of the gutters 26, to which it is secured. That part of the gutter 40 which passes around the end of the casing is covered by a flange 44 projecting from the part 10. Oil caught in the gutter 40 returns to the casing through holes 42. An extension 46 of the flange 44 is secured to a flange 50 projecting from the gutter 40 by a swivel bolt 48, while a spring clip 56 secured to the part 12 engages a beading 54 formed on the lower end of the part 10. Internal baffles 58 prevent the splashing of oil directly on to the interfitting end edges of the casing. Escape of oil through the shaft openings 20, 22 is largely prevented by U-shaped glands 62 of lead secured in the lower halves of the openings so as to engage the shafts, the inner edges of the glands having notches 63 for the return of oil to the casing, and by leather wipers 64 which bear on the upper parts of the shafts, the wipers being held in clips 66 which slide in vertical guides 68 under the action of springs 70. In the case of the upper shaft openings 22, the glands and wipers are carried by plates 72 secured to the parts 10, 12 by bolts 74 extending through horizontal slots 76 in the plates. An inspection opening in the top of the casing is closed by a cover 78 hinged at its lower end and provided with a catch 82. The downwardlyextending sides of the cover overlap the edges of the opening and fit within a gutter 86 extending around the lower end of the opening. Holes 90 permit return of oil to the casing.
